Sunrise Family Photos in Grand Teton National Park | Why Morning Sessions Are Worth It
There’s something truly special about starting your day with a sunrise session in Grand Teton National Park, verses evening or even afternoon. (I have linked examples of all these times so you can see! Just click on each time.) For families visiting Jackson Hole, a sunrise photo session offers some of the most beautiful light and peaceful moments you’ll find anywhere in the park.
For these sessions, I met families or couples about 20 minutes before sunrise. That early start allows us to capture those first soft tones as the light begins to hit the Teton mountains. And let me tell you this is MY FAVORITE LIGHT. In June, especially, the colors at sunrise are beautiful—soft pastels and beautiful light slowly filling the peaks.
Why Grand Teton Sunrise is Great for Photos
Because the Tetons face west, sunrise hits the mountains and we have soft, even light before the sun hits faces directly. Typically, we have about 40 minutes of ideal shooting time before the light becomes too harsh. I work fast and hard because I think this is some of the most beautiful light at any time of day in the park.
After that, we transition into shaded areas—often into the trees or even Mormon Row—to continue the last bit of the session. While this last bit usually doesn’t have the mountains, it is still beautiful and offers a variety to the gallery. This allows us to create a full photo gallery while working with the natural conditions of the park.
A Peaceful, Lighter Crowd Experience: Sunrise Photo Session
Another reason I love sunrise sessions is how quiet the park feels. I shoot exclusively at Schwabacher’s Landing in the morning. While this is a popular spot for sunrise, people clear out fast and we usually have a clear area to work. I have a few trips up my sleeve to avoid people as well.
While early mornings can feel like a commitment, they often become one of the most memorable parts of a trip. Everyone is fresh, dressed, and ready for the day ahead. After your session, you can head back into Jackson Hole for a well-earned breakfast and a full day of adventure.
Sunrise sessions in the Tetons aren’t just about beautiful photos—they’re about creating a meaningful, shared experience in one of the most stunning places in the world.
