Sunrise vs Sunset vs Afternoon Family Photos in Grand Teton National Park | What to Know

One of the most common questions families ask when planning a session in Grand Teton National Park is timing. I get it when planning your trip to Jackson Hole, you want to make sure that you have time for all the activities on your list. Here is what I say as a Jackson Hole family photographer. Sunrise and sunset are ALWAYS going to be the best lighting. You can find out when these are on google, but one thing to consider is that with the mountains, sunset is always 20 minutes sooner than what it says. Though we can usually still shoot after the sun goes down. But if time doesn’t allow, afternoon is always an option!

Lighting in the Tetons and Jackson Hole

Because the Teton mountain range faces west, the best lighting typically happens when the sun is low in the sky. At sunrise the light hits the mountains. I usually like to start 20 minutes before sunrise on morning session. Sunrise session always produce the best light on the mountains in my opinion. And sunset, the light is soft and golden, creating that dreamy glow. It is easier to shoot at sunset overall.

During the afternoon, the light is brighter and more direct. While this isn’t traditionally considered “ideal,” it doesn’t mean you can’t have beautiful images. The key is finding the right locations and making sure your family is backlit, often by choosing areas on the southern end of the park.

Crowds + Timing in Grand Teton National Park

Sunrise sessions tend to be quieter, with fewer visitors in popular locations. Sunset can be busier but offers warmer light and more flexibility for families traveling on vacation.

Afternoon sessions, like this one, often fall between peak times. While some areas are more limited due to lighting, they can still work beautifully with the right planning. Most weddings in the park take place in the afternoon so you can get a feel for how wedding photos may look. As a Jackson Hole family photographer, I also shoot a lot of weddings and they are always beautiful!

Kids + Real Life Schedules

Let’s be honest—sunrise doesn’t work for every family. Early wake-ups, missed naps, or tight travel schedules can make it tough. This session took place in the late afternoon, and while the light was brighter, the family showed up ready to have fun. We played games, laughed, and focused on connection—and that made all the difference.

While lighting matters, the most important part of any session is how it feels. When families come relaxed and ready to enjoy their time together, that joy shows in every image.

This beautiful family started their session at Cathedral Group Turnout in the late afternoon. We than went to Cascade Canyon Turnout and ended at Taggart Lake Trailhead. I’m so excited because I get to do their photos again this year as they visit the park again.
